The Casio Pathfinder PAG40B-2V
Talk about the Casio Pathfinder PAG40B-2V. It's a very, very good watch if you're looking into buying something that you will use for a very long period of time. I've had mine since 2000, and I must say, aside from replacing the batteries every 2-3 years (depending on usage), it hasn't had anything repaired on it yet. Of course there are some minor scratches, but the triple sensor system is magnificent! It's almost like having a weather station attached to your wrist! The only thing you're missing with the Casio Pathfinder is a GPS feature.
Seriously, this is a great purchase for the true outdoors person. The Pathfinder is often called the "triple sensor" system because it keeps track of altitude, barometric pressure, and direction all at the same time. The watch updates the information approximately every minute and is amazingly accurate. The buttons are easy to push and the information is easy to read. I didn't find the watch face to be cumbersome either. This watch can withstand pretty harsh conditions. But if you're crossing Northern Canada or Alaska in the winter, it will likely be too cold for the watch to properly function. The watch works great until you get below -10 degrees C or 14 degrees F. Likewise temperatures over 140 degrees F (60 degrees C) are too extreme for the watch. This is an easy range to stay within. The wrist band is made of tough nylon and holds up well. You are not likely to have to replace the band very often. In addition to a strong wrist band the battery for the Pathfinder is equally long-lasting. I find this watch very useful when ascending mountains, keeping me updated with my elevation provided by its altimeter sensor.
The barometer sensor will also provide you with useful information to predict the outcome of the weather, by sensing the barometric pressure in the air. If you've studied this in college, you can easily compute for the humidity and density of the water vapor in the air, taken against the pressure on the altitude where you took your readings. But of course, if you don't have a clue about all those, the Owner's Manual of this watch will provide you with a simple translation of the barometric graph, so you can easily steer clear of bad weather.
All said, this is a very good watch to own.
